Bamboo Band
About
India’s exclusive Bamboo Band, established in 2004 in Thrissur, is known for its distinctive musical approach that involves the use of handcrafted instruments entirely made from bamboo, thereby preserving the essence of ancient musical practices. Instruments like the Chenda, a cylindrical percussion instrument popular in Kerala and traditionally used in Kathakali and Koodiyatam performances, have been incorporated to add a distinct rustic sound to the ensemble. This fusion not only leaves a lasting impression on audiences but also inspires the youth to explore and embrace their cultural roots.
Bamboo Band's journey began with its first exposure to the art of Bamboo orchestra at the 2006 Traditional Music and Rhythm Festival in Japan. Since then, the band has incorporated traditional folk music, giving new life to the dwindling interest in ethno-music.
Bamboo Band's performances have captivated audiences far and wide, including at prestigious venues such as the Kerala Kalamandalam and the Fireflies Festival of Sacred Music in Bangalore. A major highlight of their journey was the combined performance at Kalpetta with Japan's renowned Bamboo Orchestra, Rakutakedan.
The instruments used by Bamboo Band are hand-designed and crafted in Kattappana, Idukki district, using raw materials sourced from the pristine hills of Wayanad. This dedication to authenticity and sustainability is at the heart of Bamboo Band's mission, making them not just performers but also cultural ambassadors who are preserving and celebrating the rich traditions of Kerala.
Bamboo Band continues to inspire, educate, and entertain, ensuring that the sound of bamboo music resonates through the ages, connecting people with their cultural heritage and with each other.
